How To Run With Your Dog

Updated: Nov 6, 2020

Hello fabulous friends. Here are some tips on how to run with your dog! It's boring working out alone. Bring your fluffy BFF with you on your next outing.

When you run with your precious pooch, make sure you have adequate water for you and your dog. Also, ensure with your vet the proper distance for your dog to run, as there is a huge difference in running capability for a Corgi (small dog with small legs) than Labrador. You'll want to start running with your dog the same way you would initiate a running program yourself. Try a moderate run/jog for 20 minutes 3x a week with your dog. Then after two weeks, increase your jog/running time to 30-45 minutes. You want your dog to slowly build up his/her stamina.

Form:

Try to have your dog run in front of you or on your side away from the oncoming traffic. Also wrap the leash hole around your wrist just in case your arm accidentally drops the leash. It's best to have a harness for your dog instead of a collar as this puts less pressure on your dog's trachea.

Best times of the day to run with your dog:

The best time of day to run with your furry BFF is early morning or evening. You want to make sure it's not too hot out for you or your dog. The ideal running temperature is anywhere from 50 degrees-73 degrees.

Sidewalks vs trails:

I prefer trails instead of sidewalks as the dirt on the trail will give you a little more bounce (less pressure on your joints). Your dog will thank you as trails will be easier on his/her paws.

Now grab the leash and get started running!
