As a personal trainer in San Mateo, I often get asked about the best exercises for a strong core. A strong core is important for overall strength, stability, and balance, as well as for preventing back pain.

Here are some of my top picks for the best exercises to strengthen your core:

Planks: Planks are a classic exercise for a reason – they work! Holding a plank position engages all of the muscles in your core, including your abs, obliques, and lower back. To do a plank, start in a push-up position with your hands shoulder-width apart. Hold this position for as long as you can, keeping your body straight and your core engaged.

Russian twists: Russian twists are a great exercise for targeting your obliques, the muscles on the sides of your waist. To do a Russian twist, sit on the floor with your knees bent and your feet flat. Hold a weight or a medicine ball in both hands and lean back slightly. From here, twist your upper body to one side and then the other, keeping your feet on the ground and your core engaged.

Bicycle crunches: Bicycle crunches are a more advanced ab exercise that works both your rectus abdominis (the “six-pack” muscles) and your obliques. To do a bicycle crunch, lie on your back with your hands behind your head. Lift your head, shoulders, and legs off the ground, and bring one knee towards your chest while you straighten the other leg out. Then, switch legs and repeat.

Dead bugs: Dead bugs are a great exercise for strengthening your lower back and improving stability. To do a dead bug, lie on your back with your arms and legs extended. Lower one arm and the opposite leg towards the ground, then return to the starting position. Repeat on the other side.

Side plank: Side planks are a great exercise for strengthening your obliques and improving stability. To do a side plank, start in a plank position on one side of your body, with your feet stacked on top of each other and your elbow directly under your shoulder. Hold this position for as long as you can, keeping your body straight and your core engaged.
